Audiobook narration
As a longtime actor and singer on the Twin Cities theater scene, my work has always revolved around a well told story. I have performed on some of the nation’s most acclaimed stages including The Guthrie Theatre, Ten Thousand Things, Penumbra Theatre and the Children’s Theatre Company. I am a Founding Ensemble Member of Congo Square Theatre. I have been named a McKnight Theatre Artist Fellow and City Pages Actress of the Year, was a member of 2 Ivy Award winning productions, and was an understudy in the Tony Award Winning Cast of A Year with Frog and Toad. All of this experience makes the move from stage to the recording booth feel like a natural progression. The core of my work has always been the same: to connect to a narrative so deeply that the audience - or in this case the listener - feels it.
My voice is often described as warm and honest with a texture that can convey both strength and vulnerability. I really love voicing children’s stories, sci-fi, YA novels and romance. My singing and songwriting make me well suited for poetic fiction and spiritual texts, particularly from the black diaspora, and I enjoy telling stories that allow me to dig into my bag of dialects to voice characters and stories that cross borders and move around the world.
Along with dialects, my actors toolkit includes improvisation, authentic emotion, musicality, and a knack for rhythm. A brief stint in stand up comedy has further sharpened my comedic chops. Even though I am an introvert, collaboration is my super power, be it with a director and a cast, or alone collaborating with the author through their text. And I give an excellent cold read, giving me the ability to work very quickly.
I’ve been really lucky to be an artist who is constantly working on stage, on camera, or in the recording booth. I have also been a teacher at an arts high school, a singing waiter, ride share driver, a director, choreographer, and playwright. I learned to sing in church, but my spiritual path has led me to the meditation cushion. I haven’t lost my gospel roots though. You can still catch me on the road singing with the 3X Grammy Award winning Sounds of Blackness. In my free time I love talking long hikes with my daughter (She keeps me up on what the kids are into these days), Traveling around the country to roller skate, especially back home in Detroit and occasionally internationally gives me great joy. Catching up with friends from Howard University over a meal and drinks is a rare treat I squeeze in when I can.
Whether it’s a heartfelt memoir, a cozy mystery, or a piece of nonfiction, my goal is to honor the work and intent of the author as trustworthy guide through the world of the book. Let’s create an unforgettable listening experience together.
